After nearly five years in the Big Apple, Ambassador Anne Dorte Riggelsen will depart her role as Consul General of Denmark in New York to assume her new post as Ambassador of Denmark to Israel, the Consulate General of Denmark in New York has confirmed.

“New York is one of the most dynamic and influential cities in the world, and I am proud of the longstanding, close ties between Denmark and New York, in trade and investment relations as well as in cultural exchange,” Ambassador Riggelsen said. “It comes as no surprise that I depart New York with a heavy heart as I will leave many great friends and wonderful colleagues behind.”

Ambassador Anne Dorte Riggelsen arrived in New York City in 2015 to take up the post of Consul General after serving as Denmark’s Ambassador to France. The appointment was her second official assignment in the Big Apple. She had previously worked as First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations from 1992 to 1995.

During her time as Consul General, Ambassador Riggelsen worked closely with local stakeholders to build on Denmark’s keystone global-local strategy, linking up with organizations reflecting Denmark’s entrenched values and operating in areas of shared interest. As a result, Denmark In New York has since developed invaluable relationships with a range of institutions spanning the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement and The Bowery Mission to the Brownsville Community Culinary Center and the European Institute at Columbia University.

“Our global-local approach has leant meaning to the way we have engaged with partners here in New York and across the East Coast,” the Ambassador continued. “I firmly believe one cannot be a global actor in today’s world without knowing and understanding local realities and dialoguing with local stakeholders from a position of common ground.”

In addition to strengthening the global-local ties with longstanding New York-based institutions, Ambassador Riggelsen also spearheaded numerous public diplomacy successes, including Winning Together — an event coordinated in partnership with UN Global Compact, SAP, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, Dansk Industri, Women Deliver, and P4G — on the margins of the 74th UN General Assembly.

Winning Together was an astounding success and created a prominent platform for the discussion of sustainability, circularity, climate and the green agenda — all areas where Denmark thrives,” added Ambassador Riggelsen. “Above all, it created a common space for the exchange of valuable ideas on how we can achieve the 2030 Agenda. I look forward to seeing what Winning Together 2020 will bring and will certainly be cheering from afar.”

Ambassador Anne Dorte Riggelsen will take up her new posting at the Embassy of Denmark in Tel Aviv at the beginning of March 2020.
